The back story

About South Beach: Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, Lincoln Road and South of Fifth

South Beach is the southern end of the City of Miami Beach, a separate city from Miami across Biscayne Bay. In a few blocks it packs in the Art Deco district, the beach, Lincoln Road and South of Fifth.

Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive faces Lummus Park and the beach, lined with Art Deco hotels and terraces. The Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive is the place to start a walk, and the Villa Casa Casuarina, the former Versace mansion, is a few doors up.

Collins Avenue

One block inland, Collins Avenue runs north past The Webster, The Setai and 1 Hotel South Beach towards the Bass museum and Collins Park, and on to Mid-Beach.

Miami Beach is its own city, and South Beach is its liveliest corner.

Lincoln Road

Lincoln Road is the pedestrian heart of South Beach, with shops and cafés from the bay side to the beach, where The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach stands at its eastern end.

South of Fifth

South of Fifth Street, or SoFi, is quieter and more residential: Joe’s Stone Crab, Carbone, South Pointe Park and its pier, Nikki Beach and the Miami Beach Marina.

Our advice: stay within walking distance of the beach, use the free city trolley to hop between neighbourhoods, and walk Ocean Drive after dark for the neon.
