The back story

About Fort Lauderdale: beaches, the New River and Las Olas

Fort Lauderdale, about 30 miles north of Miami in Broward County, has its own beach, its own airport and a downtown on the New River, with Las Olas Boulevard linking the two.

The beach

Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard runs along the Atlantic, lined with hotels such as the Four Seasons, home to the MICHELIN-starred MAASS, and The Ritz-Carlton. Bahia Mar, home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, is just south.

Las Olas and the river

Las Olas Boulevard runs from the beach towards downtown, with restaurants, shops and galleries; downtown, The House on the River sits by the New River.

Fort Lauderdale is Miami’s calmer neighbour, with a beach that feels made for long walks.

Getting there

From Miami, Brightline trains run north to Fort Lauderdale, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is often a good alternative to MIA.

Our advice: make it a day trip by Brightline, or base yourself here for a quieter beach holiday within reach of Miami.
