About The Overseas Highway to Key West: a day trip from Miami

The Overseas Highway is one of America’s great drives: US 1 runs from the mainland down the Florida Keys to Key West, about 113 miles with 42 bridges, including the Seven Mile Bridge. Here is how to plan it from Miami.

The road

The Overseas Highway follows the route of Henry Flagler’s old railway, which a hurricane destroyed in 1935; the road that replaced it now runs about 113 miles from Key Largo to Key West over 42 bridges. Mile markers count down along the way, reaching zero in Key West.

Stops along the way

Key Largo and Islamorada are the first big stops, with marinas and waterfront restaurants. The Seven Mile Bridge is the highlight; beside it, a stretch of the old bridge is kept for walking and cycling. Key West, at the end of the road, has its own historic old town.

For long stretches of the Overseas Highway, there is nothing but water on either side of the car.

Planning the day

Key West is a long drive from Miami, especially with traffic, so many visitors stay overnight rather than driving there and back in a day. Leave early, fill up before you set off, and check the weather in hurricane season.

Our advice: if time is short, drive as far as Islamorada for lunch by the water and turn back; save Key West for an overnight trip.
