The back story
About Miami on screen: Scarface and 728 Ocean Drive, the back story
The 1983 film Scarface used real Miami Beach locations, and two of them are easy to find today: a façade on Ocean Drive and one of Collins Avenue’s grandest hotels.
728 Ocean Drive
According to the film’s listed locations, the infamous chainsaw scene in Scarface was filmed at the Sun Ray, 728 Ocean Drive. The building has since been converted, but the façade and front steps survive, and a plaque on the spot marks the scene.
The Fontainebleau
The Fontainebleau at 4441 Collins Avenue, also used in the film, is still one of Miami Beach’s great hotels, home to LIV nightclub and the Lapis Spa.
The steps at 728 Ocean Drive are still there, and so is the plaque.
Seeing them today
Both locations are on public streets. 728 Ocean Drive is in the heart of the Art Deco district, a few minutes’ walk from the Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive, so you can combine it with a design walk.
Our advice: visit Ocean Drive early in the morning, when the street is quiet and the light is soft, for the best photographs.
